Shoulder Sleeve Insignia


Description/Blazon
A medium blue shield with a 1/8 inch (.32cm) yellow border, 2 1/4 inches (5.72cm) in width and 3 inches (7.62cm) in height overall, a stylized white rendition of the continents of North and South America and in top right a red Maltese cross.

Symbolism
Medium blue is the color traditionally used by Department of Defense organizations. The American continents highlight the Western Hemisphere and represent the organization's mission to provide education and training to eligible personnel of nations of the Western Hemisphere. The Maltese cross, the insignia of Columbus who discovered the Americas, is adapted from the insignia of the previous organization, the United States Army School of the Americas and denotes the heritage of the Western Hemisphere for Security Cooperation.

Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height consisting of a shield bearing the continents of North and South America in silver with a red Maltese cross in the top right of the shield. Attached around the sides and bottom of the shield a black scroll inscribed "LIBERTAD PAZ Y FRATERNIDAD" in silver letters.

The motto translates to "Liberty, Peace and Brotherhood" and refers to the founding principles of the Organization of American States to build a brotherhood of nations that mutually agree to cooperate in seeking peace and prosperity while defending the Western Hemisphere from any forces with contrasting goals. It also recognizes the freedom from oppression while seeking the fundamental liberties and natural rights enumerated in the constitutions of all democratic nations.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved on 16 Nov 2000. It was amended to change the motto on 4 Dec 2000.
